ESSEX FOOD HUB

Forging pathways toward a just and sovereign food system in the North Country

Essex Food Hub plays a vital role behind the scenes to strengthen our local food system. We serve as a connector, bridging the gap between producers and consumers by aggregating, storing, processing, distributing, and marketing local food. By providing infrastructure and support services, we enable small-scale farmers and food producers to reach wider markets and achieve economic viability. Through partnerships, we aim to make local foods accessible to all members of our community. Our activities promote sustainability, enhance community resilience, and foster a healthier, more equitable food system.

OUR STORY

Our roots began in 2015, when The Hub on the Hill was founded to support a burgeoning small farm movement and its leaders in navigating and clarifying the needs of our community. Over the course of its seven years, THOTH offered a broad range of support at nearly every point along the food value chain, including aggregation, distribution, commercial kitchen rental, climate-controlled storage, and both brick & mortar and online marketplaces for locally produced food. This startup decided to sunset in 2021 but they were certain, of course, that a food hub should continue to exist. They expressed a desire for the next iteration to be community held and board-led as a 501c3 nonprofit to achieve greater financial and organizational sustainability.

In 2022, Essex Food Hub (EFH) was established and began to work alongside The Hub on the Hill to migrate operations to the new organization. Our first executive director, Lindsay Willemain, steered EFH on a steady path to build this new entity up, while also acting as transitional ED of The Hub on the Hill to carry the work of the food hub

forward at the same time. During the transition, Lindsay outlined a permanent management structure, began to assemble a team and recruit a board of directors, and developed organizational procedures and policies just to start.

In 2023, EFH was officially awarded 501c3 status and fully took over operations. From here, the new nonprofit saw incredible success not just in establishing itself, but even growing. In its first year of nonprofit operations, it introduced new wholesale aggregation and distribution services, became the local distributor for three producers, doubled the size of Farm to School programming, forged new partnerships, added a second market location, and raised more than $1.2 million to support its mission-driven work.

Essex Food Hub is continuing on this trajectory and excited about all that's in store for the future. The strong foundation and path for growth as a nonprofit will allow EFH to continue building a vibrant local food system that empowers both farmers and communities for generations to come.
